In Year 5 this term, we have completed some incredible pieces of work.
In Art, we have been looking at the shapes and images of Ancient Greek vases. We have then thought about how they show the lives that were led back then. We then created a design for our own vases based on life now. After designing our own vase, we then thought created a collage using a range of materials. Take a look at some of our work in progress below.
In Maths, we have been continuing our fractions work from lockdown learning. We have been doing a fantastic job and using a range of representations (bar models, part-part whole and number lines) to help with our understanding. Take a look at some of the outcomes.
During our English lessons we have looked at the text ‘Who Let the God’s Out”. Whilst working on this text, we have completed a range of responses to the text in a range of genres. Here are some examples of our setting descriptions and Newspaper articles.
Can you spot the SHAMPOO features in our setting description writing?
As part of science, we have been looking at the life-cycles of living things. We saw the lifecycle of birds first-hand when we received some chicks for two weeks. They arrived as eggs and we kept them in an incubator where there hatched. We then were able to hold them and write reports about how they have developed over time.
5GH have been learning all about living things and their habitats. We have learned about what characteristics all living things have and then investigated the effects of microorganisms in compost and yeast.
We looked carefully at germs and created posters on how to stop the spread of germs.

In Art, we have been making our own clay dragon eyes. We started off by designing them using different shading techniques to add depth and texture and then practised our use of clay. Once we were happy with our clay, we painted them to make them really stand out and finally glossed them. We hope you like them!
We had a great time taking part in the fantastic Christmas concert with ‘Bristol Plays Music’. It was great fun to be part of the concert with schools all over Bristol and we loved learning the songs as well as the sign language that accompanied them. Here we are during the concert – you might even see our picture in The Guardian newspaper!
This term we have really enjoyed learning about Forces and carrying out lots of experiments throughout the term. We particularly enjoyed testing the effects of air resistance on different sized parachutes. Here we are building our parachutes and testing their drop times.
The children have thoroughly enjoyed exploring Beowulf and Odd and The Frost Giants in Literacy this half term. They have produced some exceptional Newspaper reports about Beowulf’s epic battle with Grendle and have really enjoyed exploring the depths of these characters in class discussions. They have made super progress since the start of September and Mr Hunter and Ms Schofield are very impressed with their efforts.
The children have been incredibly impressed with their new P.E. teachers this half term. Each Thursday, they have enjoyed their P.E. afternoons with the teachers from Future Stars. Rotating around three different sessions, including Real P.E., Real Gym and Basketball, all the children have thoroughly enjoyed the sessions.
