Reading and Phonics

Bridge Farm Primary School has an unwavering ambition in that all of its pupils are taught to read at an age appropriate level, that is reflected in the curriculum we teach. The school teaches a systematic, synthetic phonics scheme (Early Reading acquisition) using Floppy's Phonics in Reception and continuing with Letters and Sounds synthetic phonics programme in Y1 and Y2. This is a phased approach to the DfE statutory requirement to adopt an approved scheme and by 2023 all pupils will be taught phonics through the Floppy's Phonics programme.
Pupils identified as reading below their chronological reading age receive targeted support to rapidly close the attainment gap.
Reading Scheme. The school uses the Oxford Reading book band scheme. We also supplement the reading scheme with staged book band ebooks, where appropriate.
